WINTERIZATION TIPS

Don’t be caught in a bind this winter with frozen pipes.  Instead, take prevention measures to keep your home safe this winter.  Here are a few tips to winterize your home this fall:

  • Cover your home’s pipes with foam insulation to prevent freezing.
  • If you are leaving your home for an extended period of time, shut off the main water valve and flush the toilets to empty any water in the tank as much as possible; Also drain the hoses to the washing machine.
  • When the temperature dips to extremely low levels, you should keep water moving in your pipes by letting the faucet drip.
  • Before the winter weather sets in, drain all garden hoses and air conditioner pipes.
  • When you go on vacation, don’t turn off the heat all the way!  Set the thermostat to at least 55 degrees to keep your house warm so that the pipes don’t freeze.
